ambassade du qatar à parisQatar Embassy in Paris has just launched its Twitter account, which is assuredly the first step in a strategy to develop the public communication of the emirate in France.

Installed since 2005 in Landolfo-Carcano Hotel in Place de l'Etoile, Qatar Embassy in Paris had not yet taken the plunge of a presence on social networks. More generally accustomed to a discreet communication based on dynamic networks of diplomatic or economic cooperation, the diplomatic mission of the emirate now seems to want to add a new element to its public relations machinery. No doubt that this impulse comes from the reflections of the ambassador, Sheikh Mishaal bin Hamad al-Thani stationed in the capital since November 2014, who has by the way recently stepped up meetings with French officials.

The opening of this account should enable the Embassy to give its views on matters that concern the involvement of Qatar in France. In recent years, the emirate has become one of the most foreign matters covered in the French press. To answer some misunderstandings, this account will provide an opportunity for diplomats to provide details and insights on issues that keep coming back to the front of the stage, as the 2022 World Cup, false accusations around the financing of terrorism or deemed disproportionate presence of Doha in the French economy. On this last point, it is useful to recall that the recent report of MPs François Scellier and Philippe Kemel opposes such a view. Indeed, it states that "92% of foreign investment in France comes from developed countries", and that Qatar and other Gulf countries investments in France remain so low and insignificant.

As the Qatari embassies based in other European countries, such as the UK or Germany, which also have their own Twitter account, this decision points in the right direction. In addition to giving to Qatar the opportunity to address public opinion and elites, it will also facilitate contact between citizens and its diplomatic representation in Paris.
